So this is where my artwork goes through a change. While all of these pieces are based on the idea of breaking down our understanding of text and changing from being completely readable to becoming images and symbols in themselves. The next six pieces of work I created using a new type of process where I take gel medium and mix it with acrylic paint. I lay this mixture out on sheets of plastic for it to dry overnight and then cut out each letter individual and reattach it to a canvas. All of these works except for the piece "Time" are one word (the title of the piece) repeated over and and over again.

So this is where it all being: my love of rationalized words meeting the irrational love of art. My work slowly changes from being both text and images to just text as a type of image. The next ten pieces of work depict my slow transition of manipulating and breaking down our understanding of language.

Artist Biography

Shivani Chudasama’s passion for arts came from her passion of knowledge. Much of her inspiration comes from academics and she attends the University of North Carolina (UNC). At UNC, she had the opportunity to spend a semester abroad in Florence, Italy at the Studio Arts Centers International. The experience allowed her to focus strictly on art and gave her the chance to explore both a new country as well as a different learning environment. Her work was shown in “Connections” at La Corte Arte Contemporanea (The Court of Contemporary Arts Gallery) in Italy. Currently, as a senior at UNC, she is a Studio Art and Philosophy double major. Her photography work and paintings have both been shown in Hanes Art Center in exhibitions “Light” and “Narrations”.

Artist Statement

My first experiences with art began as a coping mechanism for my suffering through a painful and debilitating illness. Rather than using negative words to help write away my pain, I discovered that colors and lines could replace letters. Initially art was a selfish means through with I healed but as I pushed and pulled at the paint my work evolved to being a way I communicated my experiences with others. As I recovered from my illness, I became fascinated with rational language and how it could become part of my artwork. I took an interest in philosophy of language and text. My work manipulates letters and words in a way that breaks down our normal understanding of a term. My work brings together two things I love: the rational, logical world juxtaposed with the irrational, expressive beauty of art.
My current work medium is acrylic painting and consists of a specific process of building up letters. I cut out individual letters from a dried combination of gel medium and acrylic paint. Thus, I am able to create a 3-D layering of text and push my use of text past words and letters painted on a 2-D Canvas. Currently, I take one word and repeat the letters in different designs to make the word itself incomprehensible and make them a part of a larger painting. My work challenges the viewers' own common perceptions of words. The pieces are usually done on a 24 x 36 inch canvases or larger. The work breaks down our assumed understanding of words and deconstructs them to symbols. As symbols, letters themselves are a piece of art and my art communicates this; I layer text so that the letters fall seamlessly into each other and the canvas.
